SEATTLE -- Not long ago, the Seattle Sounders found themselves needing to pick up as many points possible just to get back into playoff positioning. John Kelly Jersey . Very quickly, the Sounders made up the ground and find themselves as the points leaders in Major League Soccer. "Weve kept climbing, kept climbing and now were in first place. Now weve got to make sure we stay there and enjoy the view a little bit," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. Obafemi Martins scored just three minutes into the match to give Seattle an early lead, Lamar Neagle added a second goal in the 38th minute, and the Sounders took over the MLS points lead with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Friday night. The Sounders (15-8-4) vaulted past Salt Lake in the Western Conference standings and now sit atop the entire league with 49 points after their fifth straight victory. The Sounders are one-point ahead of RSL (14-9-6) and four ahead of the Eastern Conference trio of Montreal, New York and Sporting Kansas City with about six weeks remaining in the regular season. Seattle has also played two fewer games than Salt Lake. Its a stark turn from Seattles slumping start back in the spring when it took just two points from its first five matches. But Seattle has won eight of nine and still have games in hand on most of the league. "Its tremendous, especially with what weve had to go through to get here," Seattle defender Zach Scott said. Neagle scored in his third straight match and Seattle dominated the first half with U.S. national team stars Eddie Johnson and Clint Dempsey sitting on the bench as reserves. Seattle improved to 38-0-8 in its last 46 matches when getting the first goal and are 8-0-2 all-time playing in front of crowds bigger than 40,000 at home. Fridays game was played before 55,107, the second-largest home crowd this season. And it very easily could have been a bigger victory with the Sounders failing to finish a number of chances or Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando making big saves. Both teams were at nearly full strength following World Cup qualifying. Midfielder Kyle Beckerman and Rimando started for Salt Lake, even with Beckerman playing 90 minutes against Mexico on Tuesday. Seattle chose to bring Dempsey and Johnson off the bench after the pair played extensive minutes against both Costa Rica and Mexico. Dempsey came on in the 61st minute replacing Marc Burch. It was just the second appearance at home for Dempsey since his signing in early August. Within 90 seconds of being on the field, Dempsey was chopped down by Ned Grabavoy, drawing a yellow card for the reckless tackle. Johnson came on in the 75th minute. "The team has really been playing well and credit goes to them," Dempsey said. "Thats a game thats easy to go into when its 2-0." By the time they got on the field, the Sounders were well on their way to victory. "Its obviously a very scary situation. Were down two goals, and he brings on Eddie Johnson and Clint Dempsey," Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis said. Martins goal was his eighth of the season and was a quick strike due to the hustle of midfielder Andy Rose. Martins pass was close to going over the end line, but Rose was able to chase it down and place a perfect centring pass to Martins open in front of the net. Neagles eighth goal was created by the lengthy run from defender DeAndre Yedlin, who found open space along the right side. Yedlin carried into the penalty box and had the time to pick out Neagle making a move away from the goal and into the middle of the box where he was unmarked for the easy goal. Seattle appeared to get a lucky break in the 80th minute when Javier Morales free kick from distance cleared traffic in the penalty box and bounced into the stomach of Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, whose feet were in the goal. Officials ruled Gspurning kept the ball from fully crossing the goal line. "If youre not sharp against a team like Seattle, they can really break, theyre dangerous on the counter," Beckerman said. "That was the key tonight. We just werent at our best. We lost to a team thats really good in their place, so credit to them." Joseph Noteboom Jersey . Second-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States made lighter work of her day as she beat 2009 champion and Swiss wild card Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-3. Two seeds fell: No. 4 Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium lost to Katarzyna Piter of Poland 6-4, 6-2, and No. Custom Los Angeles Rams Jerseys . -- A 25-year-old freelance journalist from British Columbia was formally charged on Thursday with a felony, five days after she was arrested in the United States over allegations she threatened to kill her hockey player boyfriend. http://www.laramsfansshop.com/c-76-rams-john-kelly-jersey.aspx . - The fiancee of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is set to ask a judge to throw out allegations that she lied to a grand jury.BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles wrapped up their regular-season home schedule with a defeat, one that was much easier to take because of the circumstances surrounding it. The Orioles 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday didnt impact their stature as AL East champions. Afterward, there was no heartfelt farewell to the fans, because Camden Yards will be open for playoff baseball in October. "Were excited to come back for the post-season," losing pitcher Miguel Gonzalez said. "Its exciting, definitely, for everyone." Boston took two of three from the Orioles, who have been playing without several regulars in the lineup since claiming the division crown on Tuesday. Baltimore still has a chance to catch the Los Angeles Angels for home-field advantage throughout the post-season, but manager Buck Showalters priority is keeping his team fresh and sharp for October. Centre fielder Adam Jones didnt start, and Nick Markakis and Steve Pearce were held out with minor injuries. The trend will continue during the final week, which begins with a four-game series at Yankee Stadium followed by three games in Toronto. Thats the benefit already of knowing youre in. "Its allowed us to do a lot of things we normally wouldnt be able to do," Showalter said. "Were trying to keep our priorities in order here, and thats getting Steve back and getting Adam rested up some and getting Nicky back and getting our bullpen as good as they can be." Gonzalez (9-9) allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings, his first start since Aug. 2 in which he failed to last six innings. He was pitching on a extra day of rest, which he believes will ultimately prove benficial. "It helped me. I felt good today," he said. "The ball was coming out well. I think its going to be all right for us for the post-season." The Orioles finished 50-31 at home, 31-10 since June 29. They did not lose successive games at Camden Yards after June 28-29. "Its been a good club, pretty consistent home and away," Showalter said. Brian Allen Rams Jersey. . Joe Kelly pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and the Red Sox got home runs from Mookie Betts and David Ross. Boston may be in last place, but it hasnt quit trying to win. "With the amount of turnover that weve had and the new players weve added, theres always been good energy each day we take the field," manager John Farrell said. "It hasnt always worked out with the bottom line score, but our guys love to compete." Kelly (3-2) gave up two runs, walked three and struck out five in his fifth successive outing of at least six innings. It was his ninth start for Boston since being traded to St. Louis in the July 31 deal that sent John Lackey to the Cardinals. Edward Mujica got three outs for his eighth save. Betts hit his first career leadoff home run, ending a run of 67 at-bats without going deep, to give Boston the early lead, and a two-out single by Yoenis Cespedes made it 2-0 in the fifth. After Ross chased Gonzalez with a sixth-inning solo shot, Baltimore answered with two runs in the bottom half. David Lough hit an RBI double and Nelson Cruz drove in a run with a groundout. It was the 106th RBI of the season for Cruz, who was chosen Most Valuable Oriole before the game in balloting by the Baltimore media. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: SS Xander Bogaerts left in the second inning with neck stiffness and was replaced by former Orioles infielder Jemile Weeks. Orioles: Markakis (shoulder) sat out a fourth straight game and Pearce (wrist) missed his second in a row. Showalter was not concerned about eithers availability for the post-season. "Not at this point," the manager said. UP NEXT Red Sox: Boston has Monday off before opening a three-game series against Tampa Bay, the start of a season-ending homestand that includes three games against the Yankees. Orioles: LHP Wei-Yin Chen (16-4, 3.58 ERA) starts for Baltimore against the Yankees on Monday.
